The Trivial Pursuit inventors Question: In 1979, which two newspaper employees invented a board game that has gone on to sell more than 85million copies around the world? The answer is Scott Abbott (left), a moderately successful sportswriter, and his equally undistinguished friend, Chris Haney, a press photographer (middle, standing to the right of his brother John). One night, the two men, then 30 years old and living in Montreal, Canada, sat down to play Scrabble and found their plans scuppered by several missing tiles.
Loath to buy what would have been his eighth set, Haney suggested they invent their own game and, 45 minutes and several beers later, Trivial Pursuit was born.
‘The fact that we were journalists was key,’ Abbott has said. ‘We had spent a lot of time sitting in taverns ruminating about weird facts.’ The two men didn’t make money from their game, originally called Six Thousand Questions, straight away. For three years they trudged around sales fairs, trying in vain to find a distributor. But then, in 1982, an American company, Chieftain Products, took an interest, and two years later Trivial Pursuit had sold 20 million copies.
Today, Abbott and Haney are worth around Pounds 100million each and between them have homes in Toronto, the Caribbean and Spain. They own a number of racehorses and two exclusive golf courses in Ontario. Abbott also owns an ice hockey team.
